Rocket Pod for Imperial Knight

After getting to grips with some rocket pods for my tiny Questoris Knights, I thought I'd better finally finish up the rocket pod I'd bought for my 40K scale Knights!

The item in question is, of course, the pod that comes with the latest version of the Imperial Knight kit - the Knight Gallant/Warden. The Knight shown above is a third-party model from Resinlabs that came with its own (very weedy) rocket pod, but I wanted to have a pod on hand to upgrade this Knight as well as the GW Knight (below) that never had one to begin with.

So to facilitate general back-and-forth swappery, I magnetized the pod and painted it in neutral colours intended to minimize clash of colour schemes.

Looks pretty deadly perched up on the Knight carapace! I painted the pod body with Mechanicus Standard Grey and the trim with Hashut Copper, washed with Nuln Oil, and re-highlighted. The rockets are Mephiston Red highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Metal bits on the pod are Leadbelcher. The pod was also sponged up with Rhinox/black chips.

Here's a better view of the pod top.

A small magnet was sunk into the carapace hole that was apparently put there for this very purpose!

Corresponding magnet in the pod (watch your polarity!) and Bob's your uncle...

Now to rocket some enemies of the Emperor, while maintaining appropriate distancing of course!

More Adeptus Titanicus Questoris Knights

More pandemic production... three Questoris Knights of House Caesarean, for Adeptus Titanicus.

The difference with these models is that I've used the extra parts sprue available from Games Workshop to build these Knights with Thunderstrike Gauntlets, roclet pods, and meltaguns - not to mention some new head sculpts.

I've painted these Knights similarly to the previous three - Leadbelcher, Hashut Copper this time for the bronze, and XV-88 and Averland Sunset. The grey bits are Mechanicus Standard Grey. The whole lot bar the yellow bits were washed with Nuln Oil, with the MSG re-highlighted after the wash. The yellow was done with Agrax Earthshade.

The decal sheets for AT18 are absolutely superb; I've been using the House Caesarean decals on the Legio Krytos sheet, there's a great variety on there. The one disappointment is the Caesarean decal I used on the engine with the Thermal Cannon (at bottom in the pic above) - it's a lot less opaque than it appears. Oh well.

Here's another pic of that model. Note the head with crown - I've painted this engine as the leader of the banner.

Here's the other two newly painted engines. I prevaricated for awhile over how to paint the rocket pods but ended up just doing them in MSG with copper and Leadbelcher trim, with rockets picked out in Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet. There are six rocket pods in the upgrade pack and I've only used half of them here.
Here's all six of my Knights with a Legio Krytos Reaver in the background. It's good to have these Knights done for now, although I've run out of Dullcote so I'll have to pick up some more (somehow!) and spray these before getting 'em on the table.

Painting the rocket pods for these guys got me motivated to paint the full-size version for my 40K Knight so stay tuned for that soon. Stay safe everybody!

Adeptus Titanicus Knights and Legio Krytos Warhounds

It was really inevitable, wasn't it? One Conscript gets into something and seemingly no matter how strong the will to resist, I will get sucked in... but it's all to the good of course because that's our hobby isn't it!!

Anyway, the familiar story plays out again with the latest edition of Games Workshop's Adeptus Titanicus. Released in 2018, the game plays out the giant-robo mayhem of the Horus Heresy, in particular the epic combat between the god-machines of the Collegia Titanica. Conscript Greg was the early adopter in our group, as he is an arch-enthusiast of GW's Epic game and already maintained a Legion or two of "Epic-scale" Titans - have a look at the hashtags on the right-hand side of this page :-)  I'd sold on my own modest collection of Epic Chaos stuff some time ago so didn't really have any skin in the game... or so I thought...

Nevertheless, the thought of an AT project was always kind of percolating... on our trip to the UK earlier this year we visited Warhammer World (as you do) and the AT stuff was of course prominently displayed in the store. The best looking package was the "Battlegroup" consisting of a Warlord, Reaver, and two Warhounds - a snip at a mere hundred English pounds. At the current f/x that was only about $160CAD - a significant saving on the Canadian retail of $200. OK then...

So that stuff sat for a bit on the shelf, then an ad appeared on a local Facebook group for the "Grandmaster Edition" plus all of the books, at a ridiculous discount. So I was all in.

I started off the Titan-building with the two Warhounds. My chosen Legio is Krytos - I wanted to throw in my lot with the Warmaster this time, and Krytos was associated with the Iron Warriors space marine legion so that's a nice fit too.

I ended up magnetising several elements of the models, including all of the weapons and the torso-to-legs joint.

Painting was pretty straightforward. Leadbelcher for the metal bits; Brass Scorpion for the bronze bits; Rakarth Flesh highlighted with Pallid Wych Flesh for the off-white bits; and Vallejo German Uniform for the field-grey bits. The whole was washed with Agrax Earthshade.

Weathering was pretty simple too, just some dusting up the feet and legs with Rakarth Flesh and sponge chipping with a mix of black and Rhinox Hide. Some rust streaks were applied with neat Agrax. The base was painted with Rhinox Hide and drybrushed with Mournfang Brown, Steel Legion Drab, and lastly Rakarth Flesh.

Here's the spare bunch of weapons. Note the messed up cabling on the Gatling... ugh. It turned out that I assembled another weapon set with the Gatlings' cables and the ones left over didn't quite fit them. So I assembled the best I could and cut off the ends of the cables, as they just slide in under the Warhound cowling anyway :-)

I also painted some Knights!

These are Knights of House Caesarean. Again, this Knight house was associated with Legio Krytos and the Iron Warriors space marine legion during the Horus Heresy.

Assembly of the models was straightforward and I didn't bother magnetising them as the kits don't come with spare or alternate weapons - you get three chainfists and a thermal cannon, battlecannon, and Gatling thing - that's it.

I did use the decals included for House Caesarean from the Legio Krytos sheet. The chequered decals are particularly useful!

Painting was also simple. Leadbelcher, XV-88/Averland Sunset, Brass Scorpion, Mechanicus Standard Grey, Nuln Oil wash.

The "House Caesarean" decals as shown on the shoulder plate came in handy as well.

Top view shows the different shoulder armour treatments off to good effect.

So there we go, that's the start of my Adeptus Titanicus project! I still have the Reaver and Warlord from the Battlegroup, plus another Warlord and all the terrain from the Grandmaster box to do, so I'll be at this for awhile. But I really enjoyed painting the Warhounds and am looking forward to doing the Warlords and Reaver.

House Hawkshroud Imperial knight

I finished my Imperial Knight a few days ago and finally got around to taking some pics. I'm fairly happy with it, though I won't win points for originality. Most Imperial Fist players seem to go with this house for obvious reasons. I tried to resist, but ultimately I preferred the bold look of Hawkshroud compared to the others Houses. Plus, I'm on a roll with yellow!

The decal was modified to add the fist.

These Are Crazy, Crazy, Crazy Knights

Two weeks ago saw the Big Push by Conscript Greg and me to get our Imperial Knights finished in time for the Knight Showoff at our local Games Workshop. While I took over two weeks to build and paint my model, Greg powered through his in only 5 evenings!

So we met on the Saturday at the GW and dropped off our models - Greg's Traitor Knight "El Booze" and my House Krast Knight. Conscript John C. also came along for moral support.

There were some nice looking Knights there, but one stood out in particular - it had been painted in a camo scheme that looked very much like CADPAT. It looked great - check it out:

We were really impressed by the camo treatment on this Knight.

It actually came a very close second in the voting.

There was a pretty nice "Imperial Knights Companion" coffee table book on display too.

EL BOOZE!

Greg did a great job on this model, and fast!

My Knight with the "fluff card" I wrote for it.
John and I returned to the store later that day to retrieve the models, just as Manager Mark was tallying the ballots. I was fortunate to have my Knight selected (by a margin of just one vote!) to represent the Winnipeg store in the national "Warrior Houses of Canada" competition. Conscripts represent! ;-)

I didn't end up winning the Canadian competition though - I even forgot to vote until it was too late. The winner was a beautifully painted Knight by Kim Nielson of GW High Gate Village. Mad skills on that painter - check out the freehanding on the armour. Noice!

Poll Results: Will You Buy the New 40K Imperial Knight?

Our most recent poll was on the topic of the new Imperial Knight model for Warhammer 40K. Both Conscript Greg and myself jumped in with both feet on this one!

But what do you think? We asked:

Games Workshop has released the new Imperial (Knight) Titan model for 40K. Will you buy it?

No - I don't like the model.
  5 (8%)
No - great model but too expensive.
  16 (27%)
No - don't play 40K.
  25 (42%)
Yes - it's fantastic and I don't care what it costs.
  9 (15%)
Yes - the only question is how many I get!!
  4 (6%)

About 40% of the respondents don't play 40K, but of the rest of you who do, about two-thirds either don't like the model or think it's too expensive. But a solid 21% of respondents think it's great and plan to buy one (or more)! I think that for a model that costs well over $100 ($170 CAD retail) that's a pretty good strike rate for GW.

So congrats to Games Workshop for bringing out this great model. It's just too bad that for every Imperial Knight we seem to also get a Taurox...
