Contest Entry - Gün Schwarm "Strike Force"

The folks over at Ambush Alley Games are running a "Strike Force" contest to promote "Tomorrow's War".  I'm sure we'll be trying those rules again soon, and I thought the chaps from Gün Schwarm could put in an appearance for the contest.  Besides - if I'm going to get creamed in one contest, might as well get creamed in another!  With that in mind, I am happy to present a squad of gerpanzert panzer grenadiers from the 210th Gün Schwarm Korps.

Strike Force from the 210th Schwarm Korps

The Background

Tracing their roots back to the North American environmental movements of the early 21st century, Gün Schwarm now fights for order and enforced recycling through the galaxy.  The troops of the 210th have seen a great deal of action against Dallas' Kommulists and Mike F's Future Brits in diverse locales, including repeated bouts of very heavy fighting in New New Berlin.  We have previously used our own home-made skirmish rules for these games, but we look forward to these fellows battling against the deluded minions of FuturKom using the new Ambush Alley rules.

This Strike Force from the 210th features is based around a pair of 8-man squads mounted in APCs and pair of deadly Panzer Ausf. W-2050 class tanks.

Fireteams deploy with their trusty SdKfz 2040 APC - MBT in the background
The infantry squads will each play as a pair of four-man fireteams - one fireteam will contain the RPG, and the other will contain a grenade launcher.

Gün Schwarm Platoon Commander (right) leads the infantry, while the Kaptain (left) is in charge of the overall detachment
Infantry support includes a sniper, a hard-hitting MG-2030 team, and the "SchwarmBot", which is on hand to help with everything from recon to EOD to close-up fighting.  SchwarmBot also mounts a heavy AT laser, so it is often sent to sneak around enemy armoured vehicles while fighting in built-up areas.

The SchwarmBot - handy for special, otherwise-really-life-threatening tasks
The tanks mount Gün Schwarm's deadly 120mm high-velocity cannon, useful against FuturKom's hordes of T-340s.  In addition to the regular supply of AT and HE rounds, this weapon can fire the special ATGM "Schwarmpunkt" rounds (with super-dense-un-obtanium cores) which can even engage the dreaded T-640.

The Panzer Ausf. W-2050s MBTs are deadly fighting machines

Mobile detachments like this one form the core of the 210th Schwarm Korps' fighting ability, able to engage right across the full spectrum of Gün Schwarm's various "kinetic community outreach" battle concept.  From urban ruins to grassy steppes, the 210th is ready for the worst the awful Kommulists and their Brit toadies can offer.

The Models

The infantry are primarily 28mm scale "Steel Legion" models from GW's WH40k range.  The officer are 28mm "Death Korps of Krieg" figures from GW's Forge World.  The SchwarmBot is a 28mm GW RT-era robot, with an up-gunned laser cannon.  The APCs are "Claymores" from Old Crow. The tanks are modified Panthers from Solido.

New Wheels for Gün Schwarm

Gün Schwarm fire team tries out the new IFV from Old Crow.
In my post last month about the project pile for the fall of 2011, I mentioned that I was working on some reinforcements for Gün Schwarm, the future-retro sci-fi fascists that do battle with Dallas's FuturKom and Mike F's Future Brits.  The Güns have been able to count on important fire support from all sorts of silly, over-gunned vehicles, but they have been behind their opponents in one key areas - APC/IFVs for the troops.

Dallas' FuturKom lads ride to battle in modified BTRs, and Mike's Brits roll out in modified Rhinos.  The Güns? They walked to the fight.  They have two Space Panthers and a Space Hetzer for backup. Even a VTOL! So no complaining!

But in the game, mobile protection for the infantry is still useful, and with the streets of New New Old Berlin looking pretty rough in the wake of FuturKom's "Occupy Everywhere" operations, it was time to give the Gün Grenadiers a battle-worthy ride.

Front view of the Claymore APC, showing the standard "support" turret.
The challenge was finding the right model for the job. At first, I wanted something that fit the WW2 theme, that I could cover with searchlights, hatches and missles (standard SpaceKrieg conversion process) and just fit in.  German WW2 halftracks seemed to be one way to go, but in the end even the 1/48 die-cast models are too small, in my view, to fit the mood/look of the force.  I tried a GW Chimera, but it looked like...well, a GW Chimera - not horrible, but not...different enough.

Rear view of the model, showing the access ramp for the Gün troopers.
I finally just ordered some APCs from Old Crow.  I was already using Old Crow products in the 15mm lineup, and I thought the 28mm scale ones would be nice too. So the Gün Schwarm War Ministry ordered some Claymore APCs.

The Claymore model resembles many of the IFVs currently serving in armies around the world, but still keeps a futuristic, sci-fi look to it.

I love the model - brings to mind many of the modern 8-wheeled APC/IFV vehicles in service currently with armies around the world today, like the BTR-80 and the LAV, while still managing a bit of sleeker, sci-fi look to it.  It also looks like it would really carry a squad of 28mm infantry models.

I changed my painting approach slightly for these vehicles - no wash of Devlan Mud, so they aren't quite as dark as the other Gün vehicles.

Top view showing additional access hatches for the troopers.
One of the great things about the Old Crow models is that there are multiple turret options.  The standard turrret is the "support" version - and even there you can choose between types of barrels to go with a "cannon" look, or a "gatling gun" look.

The Claymore APC will provide good support, and cover, for the Gün fire teams.
And if you are anticipating real trouble, you can mount the "tank hunter" turret.  I love that turret - kind of brings to mind the idea of the Stryker Mobile Gun System.  When you see the size of the gun barrell in relation to the figures in the picture, I'm pretty sure that thing will be able to hunt more than just tanks...although with the FuturKom arsenal, we'll take all the help we can get.

Another variant of the "support" turret, with gatling-style cannon barrels - good for dealing with FuturKom infantry, and university protestors.

The "tank hunter" version of the turret - what kind of tanks are they thinking about? Can probably take out apartment blocks as well...

There is a third version of the turret - "multi-missile" - but I haven't got one of those yet.

The worst thing you can say about Old Crow is that actually getting the product can take a while, but that is it for problems, and I assure you it's worth the wait.  Old Crow's stuff is really sharp, and really, really easy to work with.  The quality of the casting is absolutely top notch.

I have three of these models for the Güns - I'll do up a mix of turret options for the vehicles. One vehicles is finished, another is painted and just waiting for decals, and the third is primed and waiting to get going.  I hope the vehicles will see some service on the table sometime soon!

Belated battle report - a FuturKom Kristmas

Oh tannen-bot, oh tannen-bot!

The holiday season is upon us, and to mark it we gathered at Dallas' place last week for a game of SpaceKrieg, the wierd and wonderful 25/28mm sci-fi setting where in the unpleasant shade of the distant future, there is only armed conflict...and tanks with huge guns.

Dallas set up the table in a suitable Christmas theme. About 40 Kommulist troops - including some new armoured infantry, backed by a scout vehicle, an odious new Kombot (christened "O Tannen-Bot" for this game) and the devestating SU-3000 took on a platoon of 30 Gün grenadiers, who were backed by a mortar, a recon tank, an APC and the dreaded Space Hetzer.

Check out this great holiday candle guys - I'm sure it will inspire the public once they are properly "secured"

The objective of the game was to recover the majority of the objectives before the other side - three bomb-zombies on the table. Because otherwise the bomb-zombies would ruin Christmas, right? Mike F and Dallas rolled with the Kom, while Dave V and Cam joined me on the side that advocated peace through war.

Patience lads - need to be sure we get priority...

As the game progressed, it became clear the Futurkom side would have an even more devestating secret weapon than any robot or tank - the violin!

Deluded young kommulist interns display the new FuturKom weapon during a youth re-education session

Several turns of whinging about the abilities of Gün Schwarm ("They hit on a three?" "The mortar hit how many people?" "Their training is WHAT?"), together with other big-lip tactics managed to obscure the fact that FuturKom actually WON the game. The Gün Schwarm certainly piled up Kommulists like cords of firewood, but it was not enough, as FuturKom managed to secure a majority of the bomb zombies by the end of the game.

The SU-3000 lost out on the duel with the Space Hetzer

Dave V was Vegas with the Gün mortar team - it basically held one flank for most of the game

Hopefully Dallas can add a few more photos to show the Futurkom side of the battle. But a good time was had by all - even Mike and Dallas after they realized they had won!

Thanks again to Dallas for hosting, and to all who came to play!

Final Defeat for Future Gordon Brown

Future Gordon Brown is briefed on the outcome of the engagement

Well, given the few highs and many lows of Gordon Brown's prime-ministership, it is hardly surprising to see the future mimics the present when it comes to the exploits of Future Gordon Brown and the FutureBrits in our entertaining SpaceKrieg setting.

Since the British electorate has now deprived us of Gordon Brown, last week we played a tribute game to the hapless outgoing UK PM. Set on the otherwise non-threatening Planet K, the sinister FuturKom has marshalled a Device Of Widespread Annihilation. At the (possibly enabled) insistence of FutureHansBlix, a coalition of Gün Schwarm and FutureBrits swung into action to protect interplanetary order and secure the DOWA for, er, "research" purposes. This represented Future Gordon Brown's last gambit at achieving a military success which might convince the voters of FutureUK to at least accept his party in some kind of coalition government.

Dallas' outstanding "DOWA", a 1/48 SCUD missile model kit, made for an awesome objective

The game was set on a 6'x4' table, with the DOWA and accompanying FutureKom escort in the middle. Dallas and the elusive Cam rolled with the Kom, while Mike F pushed his hard working Brtis, and I went with the Schwarm.

An odious FutureKom detachment prepares to escape with the DOWA, aided by the ubiquitous T-340s

Mike and I set the Schwarm and the Brits in a blockade on either side. The Kom had to get the DOWA off one of the short edges of the table. Beyond establishing that the "Coalition" side could not fire direclty on the DOWA, we really did not get too precise about the conditions, but as it turned out this didn't matter, since the Coalition turned in a pretty lousy performance.

FutureBrit troops move into position, privately relieved that FutureKom seems to want to run over the other guys instead...

Dallas and Cam opted to try and push through the GünSchwarm line, which I thought was foolhardy. After all, I had a Space Panther and the beloved Schwarm-Bot. How could we not prevail?

"Seriously - there are no enemy troops out there - now stay off the radio...

Pretty easily, as it turns out. Try as I might, I could not convince the Panther crew to spot anything, and the tank was ultimately knocked out by the Cam and Dallas' T-340s. Schwarm-Bot had a good time knocking out some FutureKom suits, but overall added little to the battle other than a few beeps and a pleasant retro-GW figure vibe. The Kom broke through my line easily, spearheaded by a few bomb zombies. Hardly Operation Bagration material...

Artist image of Gün Schwarm Space Panther commander

The Brits had a not-great outing too, but to give Mike F credit, his lads ultimately got their stuff together and began to mow down the Kommies. By that time, the DOWA was just about safely off the opposite table edge. In the very last turn of the game, my Gün Grenadiers realized how bad they were going to look in the after action report, so they suddenly took the safeties off their weapons and shredded some FuturKom troops, but this was way too little, too late. I talked smack about a Gav Thorpe moral victory, but the fact is that the Kom got the job done, and will now be able to threaten Planet K with a DOWA. No doubt Future Nick Clegg will be gloating at this last set back Future Gordon Brown.

"Another example of the failure of Future Gordon Brown!"

If this is a sign of the abilities of Coalitions, I fear for the people of the UK.

Up next will be some warm up games for Prairie Con, which the Conscripts will be rolling out to Shock and Awe once again this year. Thanks to Dallas for hosting, and to everyone who rolled out!

Gotta Love Monday Night Football

I have to say, Monday Night Football is a great way to get some painting done. Especially when it is an NFC West game featuring the Cardinals (who are really not a good team, no matter how hard the pundits try to spin it) and the 49ers (who got so used to being a good team way back, they have completely forgotten how to bee a good team since, and now suck).

The game provided a great chance to finish a couple of figs. Up first, a new officer for Gün Schwarm, who clearly need improved battlefield direction following last week's debacle.

I also finished a second unit of Seven Years War 6mm Austrians, and a command base. The figs are from Adler and are based for "Might & Reason".

I'm about half-way through the infantry pile that came with the "Leuthen Battlepac".

Assuming I actually get any Christmas holidays, I hope to finish more by the new year, and also start on some of the cavalry. I just waiting on an Osprey book before I get started on that...

After Action Report: Future Gordon Brown Celebrates Bloated Victory

Taking a break from my recent horse & musket focus, last night we played a game of Future War at my place. Mike F rolled out with his FutureBritz, including some newly converted and painted AT-43 suits. I deployed Gün Schwarm, with the new "Space Hetzer", and the 40k Valkyrie as part of the lineup. Brian and Cam came out too. Brian joined me on the Gün side, and Cam and Mike rolled with the Britz (New Labour - there's an app for that).

We set up on a 6'x4' table and fought over a village. No big reason was given - perhaps it was emitting too much carbon? We'll never know, in particular because of Mike's Future Churchill...

Suffice to say, it was a brutal outing for Gün Schwarm. We got a few kicks in, slaughtering some infantry, but the Britz knocked our vehicles to pieces in the space of four turns, and we did a terrible job of replying. The Valkyrie killed a few Brit infantry, and deployed a squad on to one of the objectives on the table, but a pair of "pie-plate" blasts from Mike's Space Churchill eliminated that threat.

It was a decisive win for the Britz. Even the Schwarmbot got smacked around! The Gün Schwarm Ministry of Information will have its work cut out when it comes to spinning this disaster.

Here are some pics from the game:

Mike F's brits looked awesome. Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Wheels for GünSchwarm

Well - technically - "treads", but Gün grenadiers will finally get a lift to their encounters with FuturKom and the FutureBritz. I looked at a variety of exotic options, including some models from Old Crow, but in the end, opted for what was on hand in my collection - Chimeras!

Painting this vehicle took almost no time at all, because I simply repainted one of my other Chimeras - one that used to support the "blue" army. This worked out great, because I despise assembling the Chimera model. I don't want to strip the APCs away from my "blue" guys completely, but I figure I will be able to recycle at least two more into the tan GünSchwarm colours to provide a mechanized platoon to support the next battle!

The Finished Valkyrie

Finished Valkyrie on my painting table last night.

It's finished! All-in, with assembly and painting, it took about three weeks for me to finish one of the new 40k plastic Valkyrie kits. I have painted it in GünSchwarm colours, so it can aid in the noble purpose of strafing FuturKommies and transporting Gün Grenadiers to various military missions and VIP corporate sponsorship events.

There are a variety of options to arm it - I opted for rocket pods and a "multi-laser" (which looks practically identical to the lascannon, but would be lucky to harm a fly in 40k). The kit comes with two "hellstrike" missiles (huge, Phoenix-sized missiles), but in the end I liked the look of the rocket pods much better. The variant that I suspect will be most popular among 40k gamers, the "Vendetta", is armed to the teeth with lascannons, but in true GW fashion, they don't include the bits for that in the box.

In the end, I didn't want to go with the Vendetta variant on this model - it is a troop carrier first. I think it should have weapons designed to suppress enemy troops etc. In any other gaming system, free of the absurdities of "AP" rolls for shooting infantry, the rocket pods would hurt pretty good. Besides, the likelyhood of this thing flying in a 40k game is remote - the first priority of this bird will be flying in support of the GünSchwarm in our whacky and fun Futre War setting.

"By combining troop transportation with air support, GünSchwarm can significantly increase attack power while reducing its carbon footprint." - Future Al Gore

I have already ranted about the challenges of assembling this model, but I need to return again to the canopy. If anyone out there is contemplating building this model, I strongly, strongly remind you to be ultra-careful building the pilots.

The pilot models have big stupid GW skulls on their shoulder pads. Not only do these look absolutely ridiculous, if you are not careful, they actually prevent the installation of the canpoy. I had to pop the front pilot's left arm off TWICE to shave it down enough so the canpoy would fit over him, and even then it was a tricky job. And that is SO much fun when you have already painted it.

I'm not the first to say this (in vain), and surely won't be the last, but for goodness frigging sakes GW, not EVERYTHING has to have a fr*cking big skull on it!!!

On the plus side, special thanks to Dave V for providing great tips on using Future Floor Polish to give the canopy a good glassy finish. Did a stray, small paint brush fibre end up embedded in the Future on the canopy? Yes, but you can hardly notice it. I choose to look upon this as "character" for the model.

Mid-stage on the painting - no decals, getting ready for final highlights.

One other weak area is the decals. GW provides a copy of their older, pre-plastic Cadian Imperial Guard decal sheets with the kit. All the graphics on that one are lame, but the numbers are very handy, so I'm not complaining (they'll look great on my upcoming line of new Soviet armour). These particular numbers don't match the WW2-style German numbering I've been using on the other Gün vehicles, and the awesome stash Dallas gave me was running low, so I opted to raid my small remaining stash of 15mm scale DAK decals to provide numbers on the doors, wings etc.

What I would love to find some aircraft decals to go on the kit. Stupid things like "not a step" etc. would really help this model look more like a military aircraft. If anyone has a lead on how to acquire some of those (without having to buy a 1/48 model I will never assemble) please comment on the blog.

I'm still stuck with the Forge World Vulture model. In the wake of my last post, I broke the wings off to re-assemble them properly. Handled with the usual level of Greg B patience, this will be tricky to put back together again. And I think I'm going to switch the weapon load too (since I needed to pop all of that off the wings so it would face the right way) so it will be a "mixed" mission - 6 hunter-killer missiles for shooting at vehicles, and twin auto-cannons.

The auto-cannon is a mixed bag in 40k - a high-strength weapon with a middling "AP", meaning it isn't actually very good. On the other hand, the auto-cannons look great, and in the event it appears in a 40k game, they are good against light vehicles, the sides and rear-aspects of heavier vehicles, and together with the chin-mounted heavy bolter, will help against infantry and protesters.

Anyway, figuring out how to mount that sucker, much less re-assemble it, will be a big challenge. Still, now that I have that one flyer done, the gun-ship to go along with it would be pretty darn cool. Watch for more ranting in this space as that project staggers onward!

Fun with 40k Flyers

Canada Day gave me a chance to get back into some painting/modelling. I have been working on some flyers for GünSchwarm, using the 40k Valkyrie/Vulture models. so I thought I would share the trials and tribulations via blog!

For some reason, years ago, I purchased a Vulture Gunship from Forge World. I had delusions of this thing providing mobile fire support for armoured column in my "blue" Imperial Guard army. I had probably just watched "Apocalypse Now" or something, and saw visions of the gunship swooping to pounce on enemy vehicles, troops, environmental protestors, tax-collection centres etc.

The Vulture currently retails on Forgeworld for 54.06 GBP (not sure what the .06 is for - great service, maybe?). At any rate, I picked it up years ago, so only bent over to the tune of 40 GBP. Still obnoxious. Not sure what that works out to today with inflation etc., but as we all know any encounter between our third-world export subsidy currency and the Pound Sterling is bound to leave you feeling sore.

Once I received the "model" (a.k.a. loosely packed hunks of flash-covered resin), I realized once again how the reasons you seldom see these on the table go beyond price or bonky "Imperial Armour" rules. You pay a fortune, get nothing in terms of instructions, the thing is baked in flash, and there is no clear way to base it or mount in a way to use on the table. Pretty de-motivating. Way to go Greg - Forgeworld Tool of The Month. I should get a hat. You would think they would send me one after I ordered epic Tau...

So the Vulture sat for years in the spares pile. Like, I think, at least four years - literally. In business, I think that is called "stranded capital" or something. And you probably get fired. Thank goodness it's just a hobby. Besides, the air support would not have made much difference for the regular drubbings received by my Imperial lads.

With the arrival of the recent pseudo-new Imperial Guard codex for 40K (you can almost hear the "cut and paste" when you flip through the new book), low and behold a plastic Valkyrie, the troop carrying flyer, hits the market! With GünSchwarm always in the market for a needless esclation of the Future New New Arms Race, I picked one up at the local GW store. And, feeling inspired, I dug the hunks of resin out of my 40k spares bin, and got to work on the Vulture too.

Here are some preliminary progress shots.

The Vulture (left, above, still waiting for a full coat of grey primer because I'm not sure I won't break parts off to try again) was very tricky to assemble, as the casting is extremely poor - well beyond things that soaking it in hot water could fix. Getting the tail assembly to hang together involved a lot of hack-saw work thanks to the appalling cast-job at the engine sides. There are also two flaps underneath which don't exactly line up, but I'm not an obsessive model-assembly person, so I don't exactly care. I'll just say the flaps are varying as the vehicle is making some kind of manuever.

The wings were a nightmare to fit in. They actually fit better backwards. So I went with that (although I may reverse course, pop them off and try to re-mount forwards). Given the much sleeker profile of the Vulture, I figure a not-exactly-the-same wing profile as the Valkyrie would not be a big deal.

The canopy has huge disaster potential as well. With high-priced consideration that only Forge World can offer, they helpfully provide a hunk of clear plastic sheet, from which you can cut the canopy glass yourself! Thanks a@@holes.

For weapons, I plundered the numerous tank sprues which have been acquired in the GünSchwarm re-armament spree, assembled six hunter-killer missiles and mounted them on hard points under the wings. I used the las-cannons that came with the model, but they are such flash-covered garbage that I may pull them off and simply modify some un-used plastic ones from the Imperial Guard heavy weapon sprue. In fact, as I type, that sounds like a great idea. Watch for more pictures on that.

Mounting it will be a pain too. That new GW flying base is light-years away from being ideal. Channeling Sony, the GW tools have designed the flying base so it will only work with specific GW models. Plus, it doesn't even tab into the plastic oval base, so it is quite weak considering it's holding a flying model! Dave V provided me with some good ideas on how to work with magnets to perhaps mount the vehicle, so I'm going with those notions. Dave has some awesome flyers in his Eldar host (well, awesome until they are strafing your troops to bits, but anyway) and they are solid, so hopefully I'll be able to report positive progress here on the blog as I mimic his great example.

The Valkyrie had to be better, right?

Well, for starters, at $70 CDN, it feels a lot like paying for a Forge World model. On the plus side, you get instructions, nice clean sprues. On the down side, the level of detail you are expected to assemble is unbelievable. And GW's new trend toward unclear, language-free, computer-rendered instructions leaves you guessing a lot of the time. And the parts aren't numbered or anything, so you are often scouring each different sprue over and over again for a stupid little bit that isn't very clear in the instructions.

Whoever thought up the canopy should be tasered. While you are not expected to cut your own windows, the panels at the edge end up as a kind of mixed media - some are moulded right on the to "glass" - others are seperate fiddly pieces in the sprues. Much trickier than it has to be. Painting the canopy will be a big pain.

The cockpit is a real challenge to assemble. The pilots don't quite fit. And of course they have helpful enormous skulls on one shoulder. Which is great, because I imagine a gunship pilot probably doesn't move their arms very much, right? I bet those skulls really intimidate the enemy pilots.

Hardcore people can also assemble door-gunners with heavy bolters. I considered this, but I find that having the gunners simply underlines how the 40k troops are over scaled (or the vehicles are underscaled). In theory, the Valkyrie holds 12 soldiers. With those door-gunners taking all the cabin space, it looks like it can't hold 12 drinks. To be fair, the Valkyrie is hardly the only vehicle with this issue, and GW is far from the only company with it either.

For mounting on the flying base, be sure to use your knife/file to significantly widen opening on the plastic bracket, otherwise the cross-shaped plastic flying mount will not come close to fitting, much less safely holding the vehicle.

But a break from ranting. The plastic Baneblade was a billion light years better than the Forge World predecessor, and the Valkyrie is not the same level of improvement. But still, props to GW for giving it a go. $70 CDN is still a lot cheaper than whatever the hell it would cost to get that thing in resin from the clown college at Forge World. The instructions are weak, but way better than the pamphlet you get with Forge World. While the door-gunners are not to my taste, I think including them, complete with heavy bolters, is a great touch. In the end, I think it will be a cool model, and I won't need f***ing magnets to mount it.

The base GünSchwarm colour pattern has already been applied. I hope to have this sucker ready to strafe FutreKommies by the weekend, with more pcitures on the blog.

Pimp my Hetzer

Well, it seemed like I started this project a few weeks ago, but actually, it was in April. So my painting momentum has certainly slowed through the spring - I'll have to work on that. Nevertheless, GünSchwarm has some fresh AT firepower to deal with those pesky FuturKommies in the form of a Space Hetzer.

The WW2 Hetzer was a compact vehicle, not too fun to crew, with a low profile and cramped fighting compartment. It mounted an effective AT gun though. Overall, a very efficient design. But GünSchwarm doesn't roll that way. The problem was solved by using a 1/35 scale Hetzer for the model, and providing the obligatory massive gun, along with a few other bits, crew hatch etc. The net effect seems to be some kind of "Jag-Hetzer".....

The long-barreled, extra-high velocity variant of the 120mm GünSchwarm AT Cannon/Community Improvement Tool would probably tip the vehicle over as soon as it tried to drive anywhere. So let's say for the sake of argument that the Gün engineers figured out some sort of advanced suspension that is powered by 100% recycled FuturKom POWs...

We all know the fate of newly painted models - still, I look forward to rolling this vehicle out when we resume our New New Future War....

GünSchwarm continues expansion

GünSchwarm continues to plot a miraculous counter-attack out of New New Berlin. However, more troops, and tanks, are needed for that miracle. So with that in mind, inspired by a notion from Dallas, I have slapped some bits on a 1/32 scale Hetzer model to create some kind of Space Hetzer - with the obligatory absurd weapon (intended to be the same "calibre" as that of the Space Panthers). Since the Hetzer was so small, the off-scale version of it fits in well with the 28mm GW figures in GünSchwarm.

The Schwarm is also looking for some improved infantry. I have a Cadian "Grenadier" force for 40k, with lots of the Kasrkin troopers, so I am painting up some extras in the GünSchwarm colour scheme, to serve as elite GünSchwarm infantry, with some slight armour protection, and slightly better standard infantry weapons. The first few examples are (slightly blurry) above. Plus, they give you some idea of the size of the Space Hetzer model. Stay tuned for photos once this sucker is painted up.

More armour for GünSchwarm

The enemies of GünSchwarm continue to increase their forces - see last week's battle report for details. In particular, I was pretty disappointed when we lost our Panther on the first shot of the game!

There were several reasons for this setback- an alarming string of good luck from Cam recently, and my poor (or perhaps overconfident) deployment of the tank in the line of fire right at the beginning of the game all contributed.

Although we pretty much got our revenge on Mike F and Cam thanks to what amounted to an un-killable Flakpanzer (AA vehicles vs. infantry = good times), I was still ticked that the Space Panther had bit the big one without even firing a shot in the defence of New New Berlin's ruins. After the game, Frederick provided a short and accurate assessment of the GünSchwarm Space Panther situation - "you need another one".

So I took out another Solido Panther, a hacksaw, a GW tank sprue and got to work. I decided this tank would also have an open hatch with a tank commander. Since I was already in the hock to F*** World, I used a Death Korps of Krieg tank commander from GW. The figure is great, and fits in well with the GW Steel Legion troops who are providing the fighting bulk of GünSchwarm.

The process, painting etc was the same as the first Panther. For whatever reason, the desert yellow colour is a little brighter on the second tank. I was going to worry about it, but then I figured it was close enough. With Future Gordon Brown on the loose, we can't get worried about the shade of yellow on the tanks. Besides, someone from TMP will point out where I screwed up and I'll know for next time.

GünSchwarm now has another Space Panther to back up the troops. If those APCs from Old Crow ever show up, we'll be busting loose from New New Berlin and heading straight for New New Old Moscow! I believe Brian referred to it as a "Blitz-Schwarm"...we'll see...
