Painting Challenge XI Final Submissions

The painting challenge ended a few weeks ago, but I wanted to post the final submissions on our Fawcett blog. I completed some more Alpha Legion and Minotaurs.

I managed to complete 732 points worth of stuff for a 46th placing (out of 84)! This is by far the largest amount of stuff I've painted in one of the Analogue Challenges. Considering that, I'm amazed at just how much stuff some of the participants were able to paint.

Painting Challenge Super Post!

I haven't posted here in a while due to the analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. I kept meaning to copy my posts from there to this blog, but I kept putting it off until there were too many entries to get through. I decided to create one super post with all my entries to this date, plus a bonus entry that doesn't qualify for the challenge because they were partially painted before it began.

I also slowly completed a tactical squad for my delayed, but not forgotten 9th edition Minotaurs project

From the Challenge: Great Unclean One, Greater Daemon of Nurgle

I painted this model for the "Lair of the Great Beast" room in the Chamber of Challenges... and if this doesn't qualify as a "great beast" I'm not sure what would... it's Forge World's absolutely magnificent Great Unclean One, Greater Daemon of Nurgle. It's a massive resin casting that I picked up at a swap meet/bring and buy thing locally, likely about five years ago.

The detail on the model is great, and by great I mean disgusting...

Unfortunately someone's gotten to the GUO's backbone, or maybe he's just cracked apart back there...

So many open sores... no way this dude is getting in a hotel swimming pool.

The right hand and sword with tongue wrap were a separate resin casting. It assembled very slickly.

Had to apply some gloss varnish to his guts.

It's a pretty large model, sure to be the centrepiece of my Nurgle Chaos Space Marines force, if we ever get to have a game again...!

He was remarkably straightforward to paint, the base colour is my special "Nurgle mix" of Castellan Green overbrushed with Death World Forest and a skosh of Steel Legion Drab for that sickly brownish cast. Horns are Rakarth Flesh highlighted up to Pallid Wych Flesh, and the stringy bits are similarly done with PWF.

Stay safe everyone!

Chaplain Tarentus

For my birthday I received the limited edition terminator chaplain Tarentus from GW. It does not bode well for classic marines that the latest addition to the range is a limited edition. Oh well, take what you can get I guess. The model is one of those easy to assemble push fit kits. The model is very well detailed with almost no mold lines, but the push fit gimmick makes it seem a bit cheap (though the price tag will quickly correct that belief). It also doesn’t lend itself well to conversion. I wanted to add some Minotaur insignia to it, but the time commitment for such a small change didn’t seem worth it. It would be nice if you could even slightly adjust the pose to add a little uniqueness.  In the end, I like the model and the details really nice. It also painted up nicely and the push fit meant you could paint the 3 pieces separately and assemble later without issue. I'd recommend it, but that's a bit pointless since it’s no longer available :(

Minotaur Chapter Terminators

Back to my Space Marine Chapter repaint! This batch includes two squads of Terminators. One squad has Thunder hammers and Storm Shields and the other is standard with storm bolters and power fists. I also painted up a Cataphractii Terminator to represent the captain. The model used is from the Calth box I think and pretty common. I think I have at least two others. I added a helmet from an old Chapterhouse head and cut off the face/neck protector thingy. Finally, I added a few Minotaur Chapter insignia to the belt and shoulders. I was going to keep working on the Minotaur's, but I'm out of black spray primer and getting more is a bit more complicated in Manitoba at the moment. I guess I'll have to move on to something already primed.

For when every problem is a nail.

Shoulder insignia from Pop goes the monkey! Strange name, but nice product.

Though I'm happy I actually got him looking at where he's shooting, I think the severity of the angle means his neck is probably broken. Oh well, The future!

Another look at the Minotaur badge.
