Necromunda Gang - The Jail Birds

Fellow Conscript David Violago decided to run a Necromunda campaign a little while ago (well, too long ago really and I have been slacking) and I wanted to get into it and play some games in it.  However I did not want to use one of my old gangs so I looked around for a new gang to play.

What I found that I really liked was a bunch of figures by a company called Raging Heroes called the Jail Birds.  In my mind these worked perfectly as a gang for Escher.

Anyway, they took far too long to get done, and I still have a few more in the works, but I have finally started getting some games in with both David and Mike.

My gang of ladies, all sporting some prison orange (other than the flamer girl who has her own style)

My leader is sporting a sniper rifle (counting as a Bolt Rifle for game purposes), Mickey Mouse ears, and sucking on a lolly pop, 'cause why not....

My two heavies, one with a flamer and the other with a grenade launcher.

Next up are my gangers, a bunch of them with autoguns, lasguns, and some with pistols and swords. There are some issues with the pictures though as I just could not get the colours to match in the images and real life, something I really have to work on correcting.  I even have a lightbox and a good camera, I just can't make it work correctly.
Oh, and a shotgun in the hands of the pissed of member of the gang
Lastly and some of my favourite figures are the Juves.  They are literally little girls with pets and guns.  Almost all of the figures have little pets or stuffed animals with them, and carry guns 2x their own size.  Since the guns are so huge and they are little, I count them as auto pistols, to symbolize the reduced accuracy of a big gun in little hands.

One of my favourite figures, a little girl with a big gun, scolding her pet pig!
I am very happy with how the face came out.
I tried to base all of them on urban rubble of some kind to fit into the Necromuda universe.

Now to get more games in!

Necromunda - Hired Gun

Finally finished that Necromunda hired gun, a prize for our gaming group's league. Black and white zenithal highlighting. Vallejo Acrylics, then various oils for the flesh tones. GW washes for the clothing. Vallejo NMM set for metal parts (punching up with oils, including some pure titanium white catch-points). Dragon Forge concrete rubble 25mm resin base.

Recently Added-25

Recently Added-26

The face has a lot of character. Not bad for a 20-year old figure!

Recently Added-27

I already created the character sheet. He will be an actual hired gun, with the Gunslinger skill (fire both bolt pistols without penalty!), usable in the Necromunda league.

Edited to add: Here are some WIP shots of this and another figure, to show the multi-step flesh painting.

Below, after zenithal highlighting, with Vallejo acrylics for the face and hands painted on.

Camera Roll-1037

Below, the oils are laid in. Not a LOT of change, but note that some of the shadows are deeper, some highlights more defined, some transitions are softer, and the pupils and whites of the eyes are painted.

Camera Roll-1045

Below, Capt. Nee Sun, a 28mm character figure from Hasslefree, with Vallejo acrylics for the face. Note the photo of Natalie Dormer with her head shaved as Cressida from the Hunger Games, used as a photo reference.

Camera Roll-1081

Below, oils laid in. Note that I cannot seem to paint eyes with acrylics. Contrast is a little less, since this is a female figure and I wanted to soften some of her features.

Camera Roll-1085

The stubble effect on her shaved head was done with very thin dots of Winsor & Newton indigo oil paint mixed with Liquin, kinda patted and pushed around the flesh of her head with a clean brush.

Necromunda etc. at PrairieCon

Almost two weeks ago, I joined fellow Conscripts Greg and Dallas in running games at PrairieCon 2016 (the 37th running of this long-standing event!). The program shows the variety of board, role-playing, tabletop, and miniatures games offered.

PrairieCon weekend capped a week of being away from home. I turned a short business trip to Riding Mountain National Park into a mini-vacation with my wife, Jen. (I heartily recommend the Elkhorn Resort, and the restaurants, shops, and hiking trails in and around Wasagaming and Clear Lake MB as restful vacation destinations.) So, for a week, our car was packed with not only our luggage, but a set of golf clubs, two briefcases, a laptop, figures, and enough urban and scatter terrain to cover a closely packed  4'x4' table!

Arriving early in Brandon, MB on the Friday, Jen and I met up with Kim and Conscript Byron, We had a great German meal at Hansel and Gretel's Schnitzel House.

Camera Roll-1209

To go with the spaetzle, and the chicken and pork schnitzel, what better than some German beer!

I ran Necromunda twice on Friday night, using the Total War scenario from the Necromunda by Night campaign. Along with my terrain, I brought my own Spyre Hunters, and three gangs thoughtfully provided by Dallas, his Delaques, Redemptionists, and Adeptus Arbites.

First game, the table was crowded, with the Adeptus Arbites and Delaques allying against the outlaw Redemptionists and Spyrers. The players make quick work of the "monster" (this time porteayed by a Talisman figure with a big stick). Below, the players include Astronomi-con's ChristianA and Conscript Byron.

Camera Roll-1210

The turning point was when several Delaque reinforcements were put Down by a Redemptionist with a single-shot flamethrower! The Redemptionists and Spyrers ended up holding the field.

Camera Roll-1211

In the second game, one of the players failed to show, so I refereed a Delaque (Conscript Perry)  vs. Redemtionist  (Cliff) fight.

Camera Roll-1214

As the (real) Sun set, I lit up some battery operated tea lights for atmosphere.

Camera Roll-1215

It took 3 full turns before the monster showed. Parry's team bottled out, but the monster started to whittle down the surviving Redemptionists...

Camera Roll-1216

...until  Downed by a one-two meltagun and giant chainsaw beat down.

Camera Roll-1217

I was using Bolt Action order dice as ersatz status counters. I ordered from Chessex two sets of custom Necromunda status dice. They arrived in the mail too late for PrairiCon, but I used them in a recent game I had pitting my Spyrers against Levon's Van Saars; Levon thought they worked very well. Below is photo of the test dice provided by Chessex ( I shall post about my game with Levon later).

OTHER GAMES AT PRAIRIECON

Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator

[From the convention program:] "Artemis is a multi player, multi-computer networked game for Windows computers, and now iOS devices too. Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. One computer runs the simulation and the “main screen”, while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge o fficer might do, like Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control. Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room (“bridge”) , and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain, a person who sits in the middle, doesn’t have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do."

This game was supposed to be run in every time slot. Unfortunately, there was no game-master at the late Friday night slot Byron, Dallas, and I played in! Fortunately, the player Captain had played before and was able to guide us through a scenario. It took awhile before I got the hang of running the Science station.

Camera Roll-1219

It was fun working together to try and fight our ship against a series of hostiles.

Camera Roll-1218

Camera Roll-1220

Otherworld

Dallas ran his Otherworld skirmish game, which elicited fond memories of my playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends in high school. The human adventurer figures I ran, painted by Dallas, are also from Otherworld. I really liked how they were festooned with adventuring gear (50' rope? Check! Wine-skin? Check! Potions and scrolls? Double check!)

Camera Roll-1235

Settlers of Catan

Settlers is one of Jen's favourite games. PrairieCon hosted the Canadian National Settlers of Catan Championship. It was cool to see the variety of players who participated, both young and old. IIRC, the winner won airfare and hotel for the World Championships!

Camera Roll-1212

Warhammer 40K Tournament

There was a 40K tournament on Saturday. The participants fielded some nicely modeled armies. I still play 40K, but it was interesting to note several longtime 40K players who weren't playing at the tournament (Dallas, Greg, MikeK, and myself, to name a few).

Camera Roll-1232

Epic 30K

Greg ran his truly "epic" 30K Smackdown on Sunday morning. I have been following the progress on his beautifully painted forces. His desert terrain table is also real eye candy.

All in all, I had a great time at PraireCon. I highly recommend the convention, which has something for just about anyone's gaming taste.

Necromunda League - Game 2, and catching up

Over the last few weeks the Necromunda campaign has proceeded apace. Levon had not been able to attend the first session, so I arranged a couple of game nights with him to catch him up.

Scenario 1: Levon (Orlocks, the "Oldboys") vs. Dave (Spyrers, the "Knights of Genetic Purity"):

Draw (Levon +1 bonus: Game Hunter: One of your model's made one successful shooting attack at long range this scenario.)

The Spyrers were randomly set up fairly spread out. All the Spyrers happened to be placed before all of Levon's models, so I was able to place a couple of his models in far corners where it would take awhile for them to get into contact.

Camera Roll-1055

Foolishly, I sent my Yeld swooping down into close combat with an Oerlock Juve, who put the noble Out of Action.

Camera Roll-1056

A Malcadon nailed an Orlock ganger, but was in turn put Out of Action by the same Juve as before!

Camera Roll-1058

My Orrus on the roof finally shot down the pesky Juve.

Meanwhile, the "monster" had appeared near my Jakara, who led her on a merry chase until falling into the sights of some Orlocks, whereupon the Jakara turned around and charged the monster!

Camera Roll-1059

Camera Roll-1060

She successfully stayed alive for a couple of turns, using her shield to soak up hits. However, losing two gang members so early forced the Spyrers into making continual bottle checks, which they eventually failed.

Camera Roll-1061

The Orlocks, also reduced in number, then failed THEIR bottle test the very next phase, so the monster remained holding the field in triumph.

SCENARIO 2

This scenario was more like a traditional Necromunda fight. To win, you had to force the other player's forces to bottle out, Each side got an extra model, a Lamplighter, to try and turn back on the lights after the monster wandered away from the district. You got extra points for the following:

  • Watch It!: At least one of your models used a Blast or Template weapon to target an area or model within 6” of the Mine Office or Lamplighter model.
  • Razorhawk-Eyed: At least one of your models hit an enemy model from Overwatch.
  • Prometheus: Your Lamplighter “lit” at least 3 structures or Lampposts this scenario.

The gang with the lowest gang rating chooses one table edge and deploys his models within 12” of that table edge. This gang is the defender and must nominate one building within 12” of their table edge as the Mine Office. The Mine Office needs to be defended at all costs and may be destroyed (it has a Toughness of 7).

Because of the poor lighting, vision range is reduced to 36”, models may run and hide in the same turn, and models may not use the Marksmen or Fast Shot abilities. The above rule does NOT apply within 6” of the Mine Office or any other structure/terrain that has been “lit” (see below).

Each gang receives one Lamplighter model. This model is considered a friendly model and may benefit from the Gang Leader’s special rule. He has the following profile:

M 4, WS 4, BS 3, S 3,T 3, W 2, I 4, A 1, Ld 7

Weapons: Lamplighters carry a Laspistol, Club, and Krak Grenades. He is so well-equipped that he does not have to take Ammo Rolls. He may be given no other weapons or equipment..

Armor: Lamplighters have a 5+ armor save.

Special: Lamplighters will only shoot as targets within 12”, defend itself in HtH combat, and may only charge an enemy if there is a friendly model within 6”.

Lamp lighting: When any Lamplighter ends its movement in base-to-base contact with a Lamppost or structure (NOT scatter terrain), the Lamplighter may use its remaining turn to “light” that Lamppost or structure. To do so, the lamplighter rolls an Initiative test. If successful, the structure is “lit” (see Special Condition above). We places a lit (battery-operated) tea light within or next to the structure to indicate the Lamplighter succeeded.

Scenario 2: Dallas (Delaques, the "Slicks") vs. Mike (Spyrers):

Winner=Dallas (plus 1 bonus, for Watch It)

The Slicks set up by the Quonset huts, and the Spyrers set up deep near the train.

Camera Roll-1049

Dallas` Lamplighter lit some buildings.

Camera Roll-1051

Camera Roll-1052

The Spyrers moved forward and set up near the centre of the table. on Overwatch.

Camera Roll-1053

The Spyrers couldn`t hit the side of a barn, and a couple were soon gunned down by the Slicks, including a hapless Malcadon toasted by a flamethrower! Mike`s dice failed him, as his forces bottled off the table.

Camera Roll-1054

Scenario 2: Barry (Cawdor) vs. Dave (The Knights of Genetic Purity):

The "winner" were my Spyrers, who also managed to light 3 lamps.

The Spyrers set up in and around the sushi restaurant and some containers. The Cawdor forces set up neat the garage and behind Taco Bell.

Camera Roll-1065

Camera Roll-1066

Camera Roll-1067

The faster moving Spyrers moved across to support the Orrus and Jakara moving down the street, while the Spyrer`s Lamplighter (the Friar-looking fellow below) started lighting buildings.

Camera Roll-1069

Camera Roll-1069

Some Cawdors were in the wine store, but the Yeld moved out from behind cover to get a bead on a Cawdor ganger beside a cold drink machine. A lucky laser shot took the Cawdor Out of Action.

Camera Roll-1070

The Jakara and a Malcadon then close assaulted the Juves in the wine store, putting them both Out of Action.

Camera Roll-1071

Barry`s Cawdors eventually failed their Bottle Test, granting the win to the Noblist hunting party.

Camera Roll-1072

Scenario 2: Levon (Orlocks)  vs. Dave (duffer Spyrers, "The Ranks of the Fit"):

"Winner"=Dave; both sides lit three lamps, and Levon gained plus 1 bonus for Prometheus.

Playing a few games, my Knights of Genetic Purity gained some cool skills and power ups. I didn`t want them to get too far ahead, so instead of taking my usual gang, I rolled up a beginning group of Sypre Hunters, named "The Ranks of the Fit." Older gamers will recognize these as mutant group names from the hilarious RPG, Paranoia.

The Spyrers set up on top of the Versace store and to either side; the Lamplighter was set up at the Quonset huts.

Camera Roll-1142

The Orlocks were set up in a skirmish to the east of them.

Camera Roll-1143

Buildings were lit as both sides advanced. First blood went to the Spyrers, whose Orrus shot down an Orlock in the middle of the street.

Camera Roll-1144

Camera Roll-1145

Orlocks move into the sushi bar.

Camera Roll-1146

A Malcadon with WS5(!) managed to corner a couple of Orlocks by the garage, putting both Out of Action! He was subsequently shot down by a rival ganger.

Camera Roll-1147

The Orlock leader set up a strong point in the sushi bar, with several gangers on Overwatch with all around fields of fire. The Spyrers were reluctant to charge them.

Camera Roll-1148

With three men Down early, the Orlocks were forced to take Bottle Test after Bottle Test,..

Camera Roll-1149

...which they eventually lost, and so fled the field.

Byron has an Escher gang on the go, and Mike has started a Scavvy gang. The modelling portion of the campaign is a success so far. I am glad to see such varied units, and I look forward to seeing Byron's and Mike's finished gangs.
